Changchun 2025

Introduction[edit]
With the continuous growth of geophysical data volumes, open-source tools are increasingly becoming vital supports in scientific research and engineering due to their advantages of openness, controllability, and scalability. The "Open-source Geophysics School" aims to promote the dissemination and application of open-source software in the field of geophysics, while enhancing the technical capabilities and innovative mindset of young scholars and researchers. This training program provides systematic instruction and hands-on practice, enabling participants to gain an in-depth understanding of the architecture and usage of the Madagascar software platform. Additionally, it covers theories, techniques, methods, and the application of open-source code in various geophysical domains including potential field, electromagnetic, seismic, and GPR methods, thereby improving participants' independent research skills and ability to solve practical problems.
Furthermore, the school serves as a platform for researchers from diverse backgrounds to communicate and collaborate, facilitating resource sharing and technology dissemination. It contributes to cultivating a new generation of geophysical talents equipped with modern research literacy and an open-source mindset, ultimately promoting openness, collaboration, and high-quality development in geophysical research.

---|---|---|
8:30-8:40 | Welcome | |
8:40-10:10 | Introduction to Madagascar Software Project (Yang Liu) | |
The Madagascar project has been in public existence for nineteen years. Madagascar provides a complete environment for open-source geophysics research. In this module, you will learn how to take the full advantage of the Madagascar environment to enhance scientific research and collaboration. An English version of a similar presentation is available from a previous Madagascar event. | ||
10:10-10:30 | break | |
10:30-12:00 | Seismic data processing with Madagascar (Changle Chen) | |
A 2D field FreeUSP seismic dataset is used to illustrate how Madagascar can set up a common seismic data processing workflow. The example can be found in the previous Madagascar school. | ||
Slides (6.3M) | ||
12:00-13:30 | Lunch | |
13:30-15:00 | Reproducible paper: Writing technical papers using Madagascar and SEGTeX (Jiawei Chen, Yang Liu) | |
SEGTeX is a LaTeX package for geophysical publications, which is a important component in Madagascar Project. SEGTeX consists of class files for Geophysics papers, SEG expanded abstracts, etc, and cumulative bibliography of geophysical publications. Meanwhile, with the continuous development of programming tools, the plotting capabilities of Madagascar software are also expanding, offering more diverse options for creating figures in reproducible research. In this module, you will learn how to use the Madagascar and SEGTeX to write a reproducible paper with different plotting tools. | ||
